Upcycling is the new Black!

The piano industry is built around a familiar object: the black box. Traditional. Conservative. Often anonymous.

We restore what matters, reuse what can be reused, and reimagine the traditional black box into PH design language.

We take an existing instrument and give it renewed relevance - through restoration, reuse, and authentic PH design transformation.

The New Black

“The New Black” is our way of describing a shift in perspective.

It is the movement from standardisation to identity.
From replacement to renewal.
From anonymous object to collectible design piece.

In PH terms, it means taking the familiar black box piano and reimagining it through restoration, reuse and design transformation. The result is an instrument that still honours the craft and function of the piano, while gaining a stronger architectural, sculptural and emotional presence.

It is about creating renewed value rather than discarding value. About seeing the instrument not only as something to play, but as something to live with, care for and keep.

Why it matters

We believe the future of high-value design should not only be about creating more. It should also be about recognising what already deserves to continue.

By restoring and transforming selected pianos, we preserve materials, craftsmanship and musical value that might otherwise be overlooked. At the same time, we create objects with stronger identity, deeper story and longer emotional life.

For PH Pianos, this is where sustainability, beauty and legacy meet: not in compromise, but in considered design.

The process

Step 1 - Selection

Choosing the right foundation
We begin by identifying pianos with the right potential for restoration and transformation. This includes evaluating structure, quality, condition and long-term viability.

Step 2 - Assessment

Understanding what should be preserved
Each instrument is carefully reviewed to determine which elements can be reused, which require repair, and where new interventions are needed.

Step 3 - Restoration

Bringing the instrument back with care
Key musical and structural parts are restored or renewed with respect for the piano’s integrity, function and future life.

Step 4 - PH transformation

Reimagining the black box
The instrument is reworked through the PH design language. Form, finish, materiality and visual expression are reconsidered to create a piano with stronger identity and presence.

Step 5 - Finishing

Craftsmanship in every detail
Surfaces, materials and details are completed with precision, ensuring a result that feels resolved both as instrument and as design piece.

Step 6 - A renewed life

Ready to be lived with, played and collected
The final piano enters its next chapter: not as a discarded object replaced by another, but as an existing instrument given renewed value, renewed relevance and renewed meaning.
